Tongue Ties Today – Frenum Attachment and Management

Course Overview

This course covers:

  • Frenums - Labial and lingual

  • Different types and variations of frenum attachment

  • Screening and diagnosing (tongue tie and posterior tongue tie)

  • Normal tongue range of motion ratio

  • Guidelines and tongue range of motion ratio for posterior tongue tie

  • Syndromes associated with abnormal frenum

  • Treatment, pre- and post-operative orofacial myofunctional therapy.

The course is broken up into two modules, the first is based on the theory, classification and screening and the second module is covers the orofacial myofunctional therapy for pre and post-frenectomy patients. Delegates can do one or both modules.

Module One Part A: 35 mins

Module One Part B: 51 mins

Module Two: 50 mins

Learning outcomes (Module 1) :

  • Identify different types and variations of frenum attachment

  • Screen, identify and classify a tongue tie based on current literature

  • Identify the difference between a tongue tie and posterior tongue tie

  • Discuss the normal process on the developing dental arch in regards to the labial frenum

  • Discuss the treatment options available

Learning outcomes (Module 2):

  • Able to recognise correct function of the tongue

  • Recognise additional muscle recruitment for tongue function

  • Learn the importance of improving function and eliminating recruitment of muscles prior to having a frenectomy carried out   

  • Carry out orofacial myofunctional therapy pre- and post-frenectomy
